Happy Singles Awareness Day

Today is Valentine's Day and I have to admit, I'm not a big fan of the manufactured holiday. In fact, I hate it - starting with being dragged to see one of the worst movies I've ever seen – Valentine's Day - a few years ago as part of a "romantic date." My taste in movies pretty much begins and ends with Zombie flicks and I sat through Valentine's Day trying to pretend to be interested and get in the "romantic" spirit of the holiday. I don't want to be forced to feel romantic or see cheesy romantic movies just because Hallmark is telling me I have to. Love and romance should happen organically when they're meant to, not because something is manufactured and forced down your throat. So, I thought I'd celebrate by sharing some other, more important things that happened on February 14th:
- • 1818 – Frederick Douglass, American abolitionist, was born
- • 1847 - Anna Howard Shaw, one of the most influential leaders of the women's suffrage movement, was born
- • 1849 – James Knox Polk became the first serving President of the United States to have his photograph taken
- • 1859 - Oregon was admitted to the Union as the 33rd state
- • 1899 – Voting machines are approved by the U.S. Congress for use in federal elections
- • 1912 – My home state Arizona is admitted as the 48th U.S. State
- • 1920 - The League of Women Voters was founded in Chicago
And I'd also like to wish a happy birthday to Michael Bloomberg, Simon Pegg, Hugh Downs, Florence Henderson, and Rob Thomas!
What do you think – do you love the hearts and baby cupids or does V-day have you seeing red?
