Everybody Hates Newt

Newt Gingrich has made it clear that he is going to remain in the race until the bitter end, but recent polls show that things have already gotten bitter for the former House speaker. As it turns out, loitering in the wings isn't earning him any popularity – in fact, recent polls show that he is actively disliked by the public. CNN and CBS/NYT have two new polls this week which show the tides have turned on Gingrich – the CNN poll shows that 63% of Americans view him unfavorably while 25% view him favorably. Meanwhile, the CBS/NYT poll shows that 54% view him unfavorably and only 16% view him favorably. And these numbers cross party lines, folks – 47% of Republicans found Newt unfavorable in the CNN poll, and 29% CBS/NYT poll, making him the least-liked candidate among Republican voters across both polls. It's hard to spin that in a positive light.

Now, I know that polls aren't the be-all and end-all of public opinion, but numbers like these from two separate polls are a clear indication that even our own party isn't into Gingrich. You have to wonder why he wouldn't save a little dignity and bow out before it gets any worse. And while I'm not the biggest fan of Newt, I'm pretty surprised that he's the least liked candidate while Santorum's rating is moving up.

This election cycle it's not so much as who the Republican electorate wants but who they don't want. The real question Meghan should be asking is why would the Republican establishment let the nomination process get so out of control that it would allow Gingrinch to jump ahead of the pack not once but twice? That answer (involves either ineptness, purging Reagan fossils or both) is for another blog and time but it does provide the reason why Newt is still around. Gingrinch's expects to surge in the South then flatline into the convention. Why the convention? Because 1) he can and 2) he has nothing to lose and 3) he has everything to gain. (1) He can- two words: Sheldon Adelson. Newt's BFF & casino billionaire's donations to Newt's SuperPac "Wining Our Future" so far amount to pocket change. (2) Nothing to Lose- essentially, the longer Newt stays in the race, the more his commercial value rises when he returns to his "consulting/lecture/book selling" circuit. (3) Everything to Gain- Since the nomination is about picking who's left, God knows if Newt couldn't just "luck bag" into being selected (provided he stays just enough in the fray while everyone else implodes). What are those odds? Well, better than not. Sarah "I Won't Keep Secret If It Gets Me Any Attention" Palin has already been telegraphing an "unconventional" convention (speaking about keeping the nomination process unresolved â€œIf I had to vote in South Carolina, in order to keep this thing going, Iâ€™d vote for Newt,â€, and about a brokered convention - â€œit could get to that,â€ and if it does â€œall bets are off.â€)
Lastly, picking between Santorum and Gingrinch is simply asking how big the margin the Republican party will lose by in the General Election.

Newt is an egomaniac who is power hungry, morally bankrupt, and ill prepared to do anything of meaning. Asking to choose between Gingrich and Santorum is like asking if I wish to be hanged or shot. Meghan how can you support the GOP with there complete disregard and even hatred towards women?

Between Santorum and Gingrich is like picking between frick and frack - one is a religious extremist, while the other is a womanizer pretending to be a conservative - I'd vote for Obama over all of them, even with his faults - at least he's not trying to polarize the country into thinking one ideal. As for Newt, his ego will be his own undoing, and I don't see him coming back like he did before. Even though I'm not a Romney fan, if I were a Republican, I'd take him over Santorum ANY day, as at least he don't mock people's beliefs!

I personally believe all the Republican candidates, with the exception of Romney, are right wing extremists and far too conservative to ever be elected in the general election. Romney's problem is that he is just not trustworthy and people see him as an obvious panderer. Most Presidents once elected serve two terms I think Obama will be elected once again in November. Love Obama or hate him, the Democrats are better funded and have no expenses going into the election season as of yet. The long process going on within the Republican Party is just eating away at campaign coffers. Gingrich, known for his stubbornness, is killing the party by staying in. Gingrich has even stated he may stay in until the August 27th convention. I also don't see Paul going anywhere anytime soon either.
